When To Book A Newborn Photographer In Vancouver

(And Why Timing Matters Less Than You Think)

If you’re expecting a baby, chances are you’ve already come across advice telling you to book a newborn photographer very early, photograph your baby within a specific number of days, and prepare for a perfectly timed session.

While some of that guidance can be helpful, I want to gently offer another perspective — one that’s a little softer, a little slower, and more aligned with real life.

As a Vancouver newborn photographer, I believe timing matters far less than how supported and present you feel during this season.

When Do People Usually Book a Newborn Photographer in Vancouver?

Most families reach out sometime during the second or third trimester. This allows space to plan, connect, and hold a spot around your due date — knowing full well that babies arrive on their own schedule.

If you’re already further along, or even if your baby has arrived, you haven’t missed your chance.

Documentary newborn photography isn’t about a narrow window of time. It’s about honoring your family exactly as you are.

The Truth About Newborn Timing

You may have heard that newborn photos must happen within the first 7–14 days. While that timing can work beautifully for more posed, studio-style sessions, it isn’t a requirement for every approach.

For documentary, in-home newborn photography, flexibility is not only possible — it’s often better.

Your baby might be more alert at three weeks. You might feel more grounded at four. Feeding rhythms may feel gentler. Your body may feel a little more like your own.

All of that matters.

What I Focus On Instead of the Clock

Rather than counting days, I pay attention to:

  • How settled you feel in your new rhythm
  • Whether you’re ready to be photographed without pressure
  • Your baby’s natural pace — feeding, soothing, resting
  • The feeling of your home in this season

Newborn photos don’t need to capture how small your baby was.

They can capture how it felt to hold them.

Booking Before or After Your Baby Arrives

Many families book their newborn session while pregnant, simply to have one less thing to think about later. We choose a flexible window around your due date and adjust once your baby is here.

Others wait until after birth — and that’s completely okay too.

If you’re reading this with a newborn already in your arms, know this: it is not too late. The quiet days, the contact naps, the learning curves — they’re all worthy of being remembered.

Why This Approach Works Well for Vancouver Families

Life in Vancouver often moves gently, seasonally, and with nature in mind. The light changes. The weather shifts. Life with a newborn is no different.

In-home newborn sessions allow space for pauses, feeding breaks, older siblings, and real moments — without rushing or asking anything of you other than to be there.

This approach is especially supportive for families navigating postpartum recovery, sleepless nights, or the emotional tenderness of early parenthood.

A Gentle Reminder

There is no perfect time.

There is only your time.

Whether your baby is days old or weeks old, whether your home feels calm or a little undone — this season is fleeting, and it deserves to be held with care.

If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in Vancouver who values presence over perfection and timing over trends, I would be honored to document this chapter for you.

Because the most meaningful photographs aren’t rushed.

They’re lived in.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT LORENZA

I am a family, newborn and maternity photographer in Vancouver, BC where I live with my wife Ilenia and our two-year old daughter, Amelie.

Since I was a child growing up in Italy, I've had an unwavering love for photography. Some of my fondest memories are of afternoons spent flipping through my grandmother and mum's photo albums — collections of family vacations, weddings, and celebrations of life.

I’d get lost in the pictures, studying the details, and reliving those moments through the images. I remember rushing to the local photography shop with my disposable camera, determined to preserve as many memories as I could through film. Little did I know then, that my love for capturing moments would grow into a lifelong passion.

Fast forward to today, and my journey in photography has evolved from a personal hobby to a meaningful career. But at its core, the love I have for photographing life is still about preserving moments that matter. That’s what I bring to every session: a deep appreciation for the significance of the memories we make every day, and a commitment to capturing them authentically.
