Jericho Beach Film Family Photography Session

Jericho Beach Film Family Photography Session

On a quiet winter morning, I met a mother and her nine-month-old daughter at Jericho Beach for a motherhood session on film. The beach was calm and peaceful, the winter light soft and gentle, and the sound of the waves created the perfect backdrop for a slow, meaningful morning together.

As a Vancouver family photographer, these quiet in-between seasons are some of my favorite moments to document, when babies are no longer newborns, but still so small in their mother’s arms.

Nine months is such a beautiful age. Babies are curious, expressive, and full of personality, yet they still seek the comfort of their mother constantly. This little girl was no exception. She looked out at the ocean with wide eyes, played with the water in her tiny hands, and returned again and again to the warmth of her mother’s embrace.

And every moment of it was photographed on film.

Why I photographed this family session on film

Photographing families on film has a very different rhythm than digital photography.

Film slows everything down. Each frame matters. There is intention behind every image, and it encourages me to be fully present with the family in front of me.

During this Jericho Beach family session in Vancouver, that slower approach felt especially meaningful. The winter morning was quiet, with soft light reflecting off the water and very few people around. It allowed the session to unfold naturally, without rushing, without pressure.

I watched as the mother lifted her daughter toward the ocean breeze, kissed her cheeks, and wrapped her in her sweater to keep her warm. Those small gestures are the moments that stay with us. And film helps preserve them with honesty and depth.

The timeless beauty of film photography

There is a reason film photography continues to feel so timeless.

The softness of the colors, the gentle grain, and the way film captures natural light all create images that feel like memories the moment they are made.

For outdoor sessions like this one at Jericho Beach in Vancouver, film renders the winter light beautifully: subtle tones of sand, sky, and ocean blending together in a way that feels both artistic and authentic.

When I photograph families on film, I often imagine these images years from now: printed in albums, framed in homes, or held by the child who once fit so perfectly in their parents’ arms.

Film carries a sense of permanence that feels especially fitting when documenting families.

Documenting motherhood in Vancouver

Motherhood sessions are about preserving a chapter that passes far too quickly.

Babies grow and change in a matter of months. The way they reach for their parents, rest their head on their shoulder, or study the world from the safety of their arms evolves almost overnight.

This film family session in Vancouver captured a fleeting moment in that journey. The ocean, the soft winter light, and the timeless beauty of film came together to create images that feel like memories already.

And years from now, I hope these photographs will bring them right back to that morning at Jericho Beach.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT LORENZA

I am a family, newborn and maternity photographer in Vancouver, BC where I live with my wife Ilenia and our two-year old daughter, Amelie.

I grew up in Italy, where some of my happiest memories were spent flipping through old photo albums with my grandmother and my mum.
I’d get lost in those images. Even then, I understood that these photos weren’t just pictures. They were time machines. They held feelings that might have otherwise faded.

Photography has always been that for me:
a way to hold on.
to return.
to remember what really matters.

I began with a disposable camera and a quiet desire to document everything around me. Over time, that love deepened, and in 2023, when I became a mother myself, it changed everything.
Suddenly, the everyday moments became precious. I understood how uncomfortable it can feel to rush a session, to ask children to perform, to chase something that doesn’t feel true.

That experience shaped the way I work today — calmly, slowly, and with deep respect for your family as you are.
